About Hyperliquid
What Hyperliquid is
Hyperliquid is a blockchain built around a decentralised exchange for perpetual futures, with an order book that runs fully on chain. HYPE is its native token: it is used to pay fees on the network's smart-contract layer and is staked by holders who back Hyperliquid's validators. The token launched in late 2024 with a large distribution to early users of the exchange rather than a sale to venture investors.
What moves HYPE
HYPE is closely tied to how much trading happens on Hyperliquid. Volume, open interest and the fee revenue of the exchange are the numbers its holders follow, because part of the protocol's income goes to buying back HYPE. Scheduled token unlocks, new markets listed on the exchange, competition from other derivatives venues and the overall crypto cycle also drive the price. As a young token, it can swing much more than Bitcoin or Ethereum.
Buybacks and unlocks: the HYPE balance
Two flows pull HYPE in opposite directions. On one side, most of the fees traders pay on Hyperliquid go to an assistance fund that buys HYPE on the market, so busy trading weeks mean steady buying. On the other, tokens reserved for contributors unlock on a schedule and can be sold. HYPE traders watch Hyperliquid's daily volume and open interest dashboards as closely as the chart, because they show the buyback side in near real time. Because HYPE is the token of a derivatives exchange, it also behaves like a bet on crypto trading activity in general: in busy bull phases volume and buybacks rise together, and in quiet markets both shrink.
