About gold

Reading an XAUUSD quote

XAU is the ISO 4217 code for gold, which is why screens list the metal next to currencies. One XAUUSD unit is one troy ounce, about 31.1 grams, priced in dollars. Wholesale bars change hands in London between bullion banks, and the twice-daily LBMA auction sets the benchmark that jewellers and refiners quote against. A coin from a dealer costs more than this figure because of minting and the shop's premium.

Why gold rallies or slides

Bullion produces no coupon, so its main rival is the real (after-inflation) rate on US Treasuries. When inflation-adjusted yields climb, owning bars means giving up income and the metal usually softens; when yields drop, that hurdle falls away. Central banks in China, Poland, Turkey and India have been steady buyers since 2022, and physical demand for jewellery peaks around Indian wedding season and Chinese New Year. CPI releases, FOMC statements and payrolls Fridays are when the ounce price tends to jump.

A short history of the ounce

Until 1971 the dollar was convertible into bullion at $35 an ounce. After Nixon closed that window the metal floated, peaked near $850 in January 1980, spent two decades in a slump, then climbed through the 2008 crisis to about $1,900 in 2011. It crossed $2,000 during 2020 and set a string of fresh records from 2024 onward. Long flat stretches followed by sharp repricing are typical of this market.

Who holds the world's bullion

All the gold ever mined would fit in a cube roughly 22 metres on each side, about 210,000 tonnes. Close to half of it is jewellery, around a fifth sits with central banks, and the rest is bars, coins and industrial stock. The US Treasury reports some 8,100 tonnes, the largest official hoard, much of it at Fort Knox; Germany, Italy and France follow. Annual mine output adds only about 1.5% to that pile, which is why sentiment and holders' decisions matter more than production.

Gold-backed funds and Asian demand

Bullion ETFs backed by vaulted bars gave pension funds and retail investors a simple route into bullion after 2004, and their holdings rise and fall with Western interest. In recent years buying from Chinese households, Indian importers and emerging-market central banks has at times outweighed outflows from those Western funds, a shift analysts use to explain why the ounce kept climbing even while US real yields were high.

Karats, purity and bar sizes

Pure gold is 24 karat, or 999.9 fineness; 18-karat jewellery is 75% gold and 14-karat about 58%. Banks settle in London Good Delivery bars of roughly 400 troy ounces, around 12.4 kg each, while retail buyers deal in one-ounce coins like the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and American Eagle or in small cast bars. The XAUUSD benchmark always refers to fine metal, so a ring's value is its weight times purity times the ounce price, before the jeweller's margin.

How BRVX tracks gold

BRVX does not list XAUUSD directly; it uses XAUT/USDT. Tether Gold is a token whose issuer states each unit is backed by one troy ounce held in a vault, so XAUT trades very close to the bullion benchmark, with a small gap at times. The contract here is synthetic: gains and losses are booked in USDC, BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL or BNB; not a single bar or token ever reaches your wallet. Leverage runs 5x to 100x, and with that range a quiet day can still cost you your whole margin, so treat the upper end as a risk ceiling, not a target.

Before you open a Gold position

  1. Open a BRVX login

Bullion traders often come from forex desks; here the whole setup is an emailed one-time code or a wallet pairing.

  2. Fund with a coin you hold

The same balance of USDC, BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL or BNB backs XAUT and every other contract, so there is no separate metals sub-account.

  3. Place the gold order

Choose buy when you expect the ounce will rise into the next Fed meeting, sell if you expect real yields to push it down. Put TP and SL triggers on the ticket before confirming the bullion order.

A 1.5% move against the trade would cost the same $15. At 20x, a 5% slide against you equals the full $200.

Gold price FAQ

Step-by-step long and short: how to trade Gold.

What is the gold price today?

4,151.31 USDT per ounce on the BRVX XAUT/USDT feed, +1.15% since this time yesterday. Our snapshot reloads every few minutes, while the app streams each gold tick.

How many grams are in the troy ounce gold is priced in?

About 31.1 grams. A troy ounce is roughly 10% heavier than the everyday ounce used for groceries, which is why a gram price is the ounce price divided by 31.1.

Is gold a hedge against a falling dollar?

Often, not always. A weaker dollar makes bullion cheaper for buyers paying in euros, rupees or yuan, which tends to support demand, but in 2022 gold fell even while inflation was high because yields rose faster.

What does a gold trade cost on BRVX?

0.08% of position size on entry and 0.08% on exit. Funding applies every hour; for XAUT the two sides differ, currently 0.0023% for longs and 0.0091% for shorts.

Which leverage range is available for XAUT/USDT?

5x up to 100x. Bullion can move 2–3% on an FOMC day, so a high multiplier leaves little room: at the XAUT maximum such a move can wipe out your margin.

How much gold do central banks own?

Around a fifth of all above-ground metal. The US reports roughly 8,100 tonnes, followed by Germany, Italy and France; China and India have been adding to reserves.

How do I convert the ounce price to a price per gram or kilo?

Divide the troy-ounce figure by 31.1035 for grams, or multiply it by about 32.15 for a kilogram. For 18-karat items, take 75% of the fine-gold result.

What is the LBMA gold price?

A benchmark set twice each London business day, at 10:30 and 15:00, through an electronic auction among accredited banks. Miners, refiners and central banks use it to settle contracts.

Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
