Why short with a perp instead of borrowing shares?

A perp short has no borrow queue and no hard-to-borrow list, because you never hold the stock — you hold a contract on its price. The costs are the opening and closing fee (0.05% each on stocks) and funding every 1 hour while the short is open. Losses on a short grow as the price rises, which is why leverage and a stop-loss matter more here.
