How to read a correlation matrix

  • One number per pair

Each cell is the correlation coefficient r of two markets' daily returns. The diagonal is always +1: a market compared with itself.

  • Returns, not prices

Two prices that both trend up look related on a chart even when their daily moves are not. The matrix compares the day-to-day changes, which is what a hedge or a second position actually faces.

  • Windows disagree on purpose

30 days shows the current regime, 90 days the background. When the two differ a lot, the relationship is unstable, and a pair that looked like a hedge last month may not be one now.

  • Correlation is not a forecast

A high r says two markets moved together in the window. It says nothing about direction, and it can break exactly on the days that matter.

Methodology

Daily candles come from the public BRVX chart feed (v1.rates.getChart, 1d, mid price) for each market's SYMBOL/USDT pair. We take close-to-close returns on the UTC calendar, drop today's unfinished candle, keep only days every market has, and compute Pearson r for each pair over the last 30 and 90 of those days. Stock, index, commodity and EUR prices on BRVX are a synthetic feed that keeps moving at night, at weekends and on US holidays, so weekend days are included for every market. Results will differ from studies that use exchange closing prices and trading days only.

Correlation FAQ

Is bitcoin correlated with the Nasdaq?

Yes, strongly. Over the last 30 days the correlation of BTC and Nasdaq-100 daily returns on BRVX was +0.71, and +0.41 over 90 days. Above 0.6 counts as strong, below 0.3 as weak.

Is bitcoin correlated with gold?

Not much. BTC and gold (XAUT) daily returns had a correlation of +0.28 over 30 days and +0.51 over 90 days on BRVX prices.

Is bitcoin correlated with oil?

Loosely, in the opposite direction. The 30-day correlation of BTC and WTI oil was −0.36; over 90 days it was −0.17.

What is a correlation matrix?

A table of correlation coefficients where every row and column is a market and each cell shows how closely two markets' returns moved together, from −1 (opposite) to +1 (together).

What is a good correlation coefficient?

It depends on the use. For diversification you want pairs near 0 or negative; 0.3 and below is usually read as weak, 0.6 and above as strong. On this page Bitcoin/Ethereum was the strongest pair at +0.94 over 30 days.

How often is the matrix updated?

Daily. The page recalculates from the BRVX price feed and shows the date range it used above each table.
