BRVX Glossary · FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) · Updated September 25, 2026

FUD stands for fear, uncertainty and doubt: negative news, rumours or claims that make people sell. In crypto the word is used both for genuine warnings and, dismissively, for any criticism holders do not want to hear.

Where the term comes from

The phrase was used in the 1970s computer industry, where IBM salespeople were said to spread doubt about rival products. Crypto communities adopted it in the 2010s, usually as FUD, for negative stories about a coin.

Real risk or noise?

  • Check the primary source: a filing, court document or official post, not a screenshot.
  • Ask whether it changes the asset's supply, access or legal status.
  • Look at on-chain or order-book data, not only social media.
  • Remember that calling something FUD does not make it false.

How FUD moves prices

FUD tends to hit hardest in thin markets and in assets held mostly by retail traders. In leveraged markets it can start a chain of liquidations that pushes price far beyond what the news itself justified.

On BRVX

BRVX lists perpetuals on 41 markets, including coins where rumours travel fast. A stop-loss set before the news arrives is the practical defence, because a leveraged position can be liquidated before the truth of a story is known.

Questions about FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt)

What does FUD mean?

Fear, uncertainty and doubt — information that makes people nervous enough to sell.

Is FUD always false?

No. Some FUD turns out to be accurate; the label says nothing about whether a claim is true.

What is the opposite of FUD?

FOMO, the fear of missing out, which pushes people to buy.
