BRVX Glossary · Volatility · Updated September 25, 2026

Volatility is how much and how fast an asset's price moves over a period, usually measured as the standard deviation of its returns. High volatility means wide, frequent swings in both directions; low volatility means a price that drifts in a narrow range.

The formula

Volatility standard deviation of returns Annualised daily σ × √365

The wider the spread of daily returns around their average, the higher the volatility.

Historical and implied volatility

Historical (realised) volatility is measured from past prices. Implied volatility is backed out of option prices and reflects what the market expects. Crypto usually shows higher realised volatility than large-cap stocks, and a single stock often more than the index it belongs to.

Why it matters with leverage

Volatility does not tell you the direction, only the size of the swings. With leverage every swing is multiplied: a market that moves 5% in a day can take a 20x position through its whole margin, even if the price ends the day unchanged.

On BRVX

BRVX lists 41 perpetual markets across crypto, stocks, commodities, EUR and an index, so volatility ranges from a currency pair to small-cap tokens. The leverage cap is set per market — 150x on BTC/USDT, 50x on NVDA — and a lower setting leaves more room for normal swings.

Questions about Volatility

Is high volatility good or bad for traders?

Neither. It widens both potential gains and losses; it rewards size discipline and punishes large leverage.

What is the VIX?

The VIX is an index of the implied volatility of S&P 500 options over the next 30 days, often called the fear gauge.

How do I lower the effect of volatility on a position?

Use less leverage, a smaller position and a stop-loss placed beyond normal daily swings.
