BRVX Glossary · Stop-loss · Updated September 24, 2026

A stop-loss is an order that closes a position automatically when the price reaches a level the trader sets in advance, to cap the loss on a trade. Once triggered, a stop-market order closes at the next available price, which can be worse than the stop level in a fast market.

The formula

Long: stop below entry Short: stop above entry

A stop caps the loss before liquidation does, if it sits closer to the entry than the liquidation price.

How it works

  1. Set Stop price
  2. Price hits it Order triggers
  3. Closed Loss capped

Where the stop goes

For a long position the stop sits below the entry; for a short, above it. The distance from entry to stop, multiplied by the position size, is the planned loss — plus fees.

On a leveraged position the stop must sit between the entry and the liquidation price. A stop placed beyond the liquidation price never gets the chance to trigger.

Stop-market vs stop-limit

Sizing from the stop

Many traders pick the stop first and the size second: size = amount willing to lose ÷ (stop distance + fees). On a BTC/USDT position on BRVX, fees are 0.1% to open and 0.1% to close, so a 2% stop on a 1,000 USDT position risks about 20 USDT plus 2 USDT in fees.

Questions about Stop-loss

Does a stop-loss guarantee the exit price?

No. A stop-market order closes at the next available price, which can be worse than the stop level when the market gaps or moves fast.

Should the stop be closer than the liquidation price?

Yes. If the stop sits beyond the liquidation price, liquidation closes the position first.

How far should a stop-loss be?

There is no universal distance. A common approach sets it where the trade idea is proven wrong, then sizes the position so that loss is acceptable.
