BRVX Glossary · Market vs limit order · Updated September 25, 2026
A market order buys or sells immediately at the best available price, while a limit order only fills at a price the trader sets or better. A market order guarantees execution but not the price; a limit order guarantees the price but not execution.
The formula
Market order: fill now, price may slip Limit order: fill at your price, or not at all
The trade-off is certainty of execution against certainty of price.
How it works
- Market Speed
- Limit Price control
Side by side
- Market order: fills at once, pays the spread, can slip in fast or thin markets.
- Limit order: sits in the order book until the price is reached, may never fill.
- Stop orders turn into a market order once a trigger price is hit.
A worked example
Bitcoin is quoted at 60,000 USDT. A market buy fills right away, perhaps at 60,012 USDT if the price moves. A limit buy at 59,800 USDT fills only if the price drops to 59,800 USDT or lower.
