BRVX Glossary · HODL · Updated September 25, 2026
HODL is crypto slang for holding an asset for the long term instead of selling during price swings. It began as a misspelling of “hold” in a Bitcointalk forum post from December 2013 and was later back-filled as “hold on for dear life”.
The origin
On 18 December 2013, a Bitcointalk user titled a post “I AM HODLING” while Bitcoin fell from over $1,000 to about $500. The typo became a meme and then a strategy name.
The case for and against
- For: it avoids trading costs and the timing mistakes most active traders make.
- For: it lets long-term growth, if any, compound without interruption.
- Against: it means sitting through falls of 70–80%, which Bitcoin has had several times.
- Against: it only works for assets that recover; many coins never did.
HODL versus trading
HODLing is a spot strategy: you keep the coins in a wallet. Trading perpetual contracts is the opposite approach — positions are short-term, carry funding costs over time and can be liquidated, so holding a leveraged position through a bear market is not HODLing.
On BRVX
BRVX offers perpetual contracts rather than coin custody for investing, so it is a trading venue, not a HODL wallet. Holding a BRVX position costs funding every hour on BTC/USDT, which is why long holding periods and perpetuals fit poorly together.
Questions about HODL
What does HODL stand for?
It started as a typo for “hold”; “hold on for dear life” was added later.
Is HODLing better than trading?
For most people, historically, holding has beaten active trading after costs — for assets that recovered.
Can you HODL a perpetual future?
Not in practice: funding charges add up and leverage can liquidate the position during a deep fall.
Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
