BRVX Glossary · Double top pattern · Updated September 25, 2026

A double top is a bearish reversal chart pattern in which price hits roughly the same high twice, with a pullback in between, and then breaks below the low of that pullback. The shape resembles the letter M and marks buyers failing twice at the same level.

Building the M

  • A rally prints a peak and pulls back.
  • The pullback's low becomes the neckline.
  • A second rally stalls within a few percent of the first peak, typically with thinner participation.
  • Confirmation only comes with a close under the neckline.

Projecting the drop

The measured move subtracts the height from tops to neckline from the break: tops at $120 with a neckline at $110 project about $100. A stop above the second top keeps the risk defined.

Why many M-shapes fail

Two highs are not a double top until the neckline breaks — many M-shapes resolve upwards. Tops that are far apart in price, or a second top with more volume than the first, weaken the read.
