BRVX Glossary · Head and shoulders pattern · Updated September 25, 2026
A head and shoulders pattern is a chart formation of three peaks — a higher middle peak (the head) between two lower ones (the shoulders) — that signals a possible reversal from an uptrend to a downtrend once price breaks below the neckline connecting the lows between them.
The formula
Target Neckline − (Head − Neckline)
The classic measured move projects the head's height below the neckline.
How it works
- Left shoulder First peak
- Head Higher peak
- Right shoulder Lower peak, then neckline break
How traders read it
- The pattern is only complete when price closes below the neckline.
- Volume often fades on the head and right shoulder.
- A retest of the neckline from below is a common second entry.
- The inverse head and shoulders, three troughs, signals a possible bottom.
Where it fails
Many patterns never break the neckline, or break it and reverse back up. The measured target is a rule of thumb, not a forecast; a stop above the right shoulder defines the loss if the pattern fails.
