BRVX Glossary · Pump and dump · Updated September 25, 2026
A pump and dump is a market-manipulation scheme in which promoters buy a thinly traded asset, hype it to attract buyers, then sell into the rise, leaving late buyers with losses. It is illegal in securities markets, and regulators such as the US SEC have brought pump-and-dump cases involving crypto assets.
The stages
- Accumulate: organisers buy a low-liquidity coin or penny stock quietly.
- Pump: coordinated posts, influencer mentions and fake urgency push buyers in.
- Dump: organisers sell into the buying, often within minutes or hours.
- Collapse: volume disappears and price falls back, often below where it started.
Warning signs
Very small market cap, sudden volume from nowhere, promotion that stresses speed over substance, anonymous promoters and unclear token ownership are the classic signs. Coordinated pumps organised in chat groups often reverse within an hour of the first promotional post.
Why late buyers lose
In a pump the only buyers left at the top are the people the promotion reached last. Liquidity is thin, so when organisers sell, price gaps down faster than anyone can exit.
On BRVX
BRVX lists perpetuals on 41 markets with prices from its tariffs; a perpetual's price follows the underlying market, so a pump in the underlying coin still shows up on the chart. Setting a stop-loss before entering a fast-moving coin caps what a sudden dump can take.
