Market cap, short for market capitalization, is the total value of an asset's shares or coins in circulation: price multiplied by the circulating supply. A company with 1 billion shares at $50 has a $50 billion market cap.

Size bands for stocks
- Mega cap: above $200 billion.
- Large cap: $10–200 billion.
- Mid cap: $2–10 billion.
- Small cap: $250 million–2 billion.
- Micro cap: below $250 million.
Market cap in crypto
Crypto sites quote two figures: market cap on circulating supply and fully diluted valuation (FDV) on the maximum supply. A token with 10% of its supply circulating can look small by market cap while its FDV is ten times larger, and future unlocks add sellers.
What it does not tell you
Market cap is not money invested and not the amount that could be withdrawn. A thinly traded token can show a large market cap because a small trade moved its price. Liquidity and volume show how much can actually change hands.
