BRVX Glossary · Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) · Updated September 25, 2026

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) is investing a fixed amount at regular intervals regardless of price, so more units are bought when prices are low and fewer when they are high. Investing $100 every week in the same asset for a year is DCA.

The formula

Units bought Fixed amount ÷ Price Average cost Total spent ÷ Total units

$100 at $10 and $100 at $5 buys 30 units at an average of $6.67.

How it works

  1. Schedule Same day, same sum
  2. Buy More units when cheap
  3. Average Below average price

Worked example

  • Month 1: $100 at $10 buys 10 units.
  • Month 2: $100 at $5 buys 20 units.
  • Month 3: $100 at $8 buys 12.5 units.
  • Total: $300 for 42.5 units — an average cost of $7.06, below the $7.67 average price.

DCA versus lump sum

Studies of stock markets, including Vanguard's 2012 analysis, found that investing a lump sum at once beat DCA about two-thirds of the time, because markets rise more often than they fall. DCA's value is behavioural: it removes the question of when to buy and softens the regret of buying before a drop.

Where DCA does not fit

DCA assumes the asset is kept and the investor can wait. With leveraged derivatives, adding to a losing position on a schedule raises exposure while margin shrinks, which moves liquidation closer — the opposite of DCA's risk profile.

On BRVX

BRVX offers perpetual contracts, not spot purchases, and has no recurring-buy feature, so DCA in the investing sense is not something BRVX provides. Each BRVX position is opened at 5x leverage or more, and averaging into one adds leverage risk rather than reducing it.

Questions about Dollar-cost averaging (DCA)

Is dollar-cost averaging a good strategy?

It is a disciplined way to invest regularly; a lump sum has historically done better more often, but DCA reduces timing risk.

How often should you dollar-cost average?

Any fixed schedule works — weekly or monthly is common, matched to when income arrives.

Is averaging down the same as DCA?

No. DCA buys on a schedule whatever the price; averaging down adds only after a loss.
