Paper trading

What it is good for

• Learning the order ticket: sides, sizes, take-profit and stop-loss.
• Testing whether a setup has any edge over 30–50 trades.
• Checking that you can follow a written plan without skipping steps.
• Practising position-size maths before it costs anything.

What it cannot teach

Simulated fills ignore slippage and queue position, and simulated money carries no fear. Traders who follow rules perfectly on paper often break them with real money on the first losing streak. Fees and funding are also easy to leave out of a simulator.

From paper to real size

A common path is to paper trade until the plan runs for a month without rule breaks, then trade the smallest size the venue allows for another month, keeping a journal. Size rises only when the real results look like the simulated ones.
