BRVX Glossary · Long and short positions · Updated September 24, 2026

Going long means you profit if the price climbs; going short means you profit if it drops. On a perpetual contract neither side owns or borrows the asset — each trader picks a direction, a size and a leverage, and pays the funding rate set for that side.

The formula

Long gains when price rises Short gains when price falls

Both sides open the same way — a direction, a size and a leverage.

How it works

  1. Pick Long or short
  2. Size Margin × Leverage
  3. Result Price move × Size

Two sides of every contract

Each contract is matched: for every long there is a short holding the opposite exposure. Open interest therefore counts one side of the market only, and in a standard perpetual the funding payment is what pulls the contract price back toward its index.

Long and short on BRVX

Direction is a single toggle in the BRVX order form: Buy opens a long, Sell opens a short. Funding can differ by side — on SOL/USDT it is 0.016% per hour for longs and 0.0103% for shorts — while on NVDA/USDT both sides pay 0.0023%. Fees do not depend on direction: 0.05% in and 0.05% out on NVDA/USDT.

Questions about Long and short positions

What does going long mean in crypto?

Taking a position that makes money if the price rises. On a perpetual that is a Buy order; you never need to hold the coin itself.

Can I be long and short at the same time?

On different markets, yes. Holding both on one market mostly nets out, while fees and funding keep accruing on each leg.

Is a short riskier than a long?

With leverage the mechanics mirror each other: a given percentage move against either side eats the same share of the margin. The difference is the price path — a rally has no ceiling, while a fall stops at zero.

Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
