What Worldcoin is
Worldcoin, now branded simply as World, is a project co-founded by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and developed by the company Tools for Humanity. Its aim is a global proof-of-personhood system: people have their iris scanned by a device called the Orb and receive a World ID that shows they are a unique human without revealing who they are. WLD is the project's token, distributed to verified users and used in its ecosystem, including World Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 network.
