About Meta
An ad business built on four apps
Meta Platforms owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, plus the newer Threads. Together they reach billions of people each day, and almost all of Meta's revenue comes from selling ads on them. A separate unit, Reality Labs, builds Quest VR headsets and smart glasses; it has lost tens of billions of dollars so far. Mark Zuckerberg founded the company as Facebook in 2004 and renamed it Meta in 2021.
The 2022 crash and the rebound
In 2022 the stock fell about three quarters from its peak: Apple's privacy change made ad targeting harder, TikTok competed for attention and spending on the metaverse ballooned. In 2023 Meta cut costs and jobs, and ad revenue recovered, so the shares rebounded sharply. That episode shows how fast sentiment on META can turn.
What moves META
Ad pricing and the number of ad impressions, the outlook for the next quarter and, increasingly, the capital budget for AI data centres. When Meta raises spending plans more than expected, the stock has sometimes fallen even after strong revenue. Regulation matters as well: EU rules on data and competition, US antitrust cases and child-safety laws.
Report timing
Meta reports after the Nasdaq close, typically in late January or early February, late April, late July and late October. Because the stock often moves 10% or more the next day, the report is the main scheduled event for META traders.
AI as product and cost
Meta uses AI to rank feeds and target ads, which has helped ad prices, and it releases its Llama models openly for developers. It also offers Meta AI, an assistant inside its apps. Training these systems needs huge data centres, so Meta's capital spending has climbed steeply. The stock reaction to each report now depends on whether revenue growth keeps up with that bill.
META/USDT on BRVX
META/USDT is a synthetic perpetual contract that tracks the Meta share price in USDT, with margin in USDC, BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL or BNB and no expiry. The contract keeps trading after 16:00 New York time, so the results-night move is priced immediately. Meta started paying a dividend in 2024; the perp pays none, since you hold a price position, not stock.
