About Oracle
Databases, business software and cloud
Oracle, founded by Larry Ellison and partners in 1977, built its business on the Oracle Database, still used by banks, governments and large companies. It also sells business software such as Fusion and NetSuite, owns the health-records firm Cerner, bought in 2022, and runs Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which rents out computing power. The company moved its headquarters from California to Austin, Texas, in 2020.
From software vendor to AI cloud
For years Oracle was seen as a slow, cash-rich software firm. That changed when AI labs and large tech companies began signing multi-year contracts to rent OCI capacity for training models. Those deals show up in remaining performance obligations (RPO), the backlog of contracted revenue, and big jumps in RPO have triggered some of the largest one-day moves in the stock's history.
What the market watches
OCI revenue growth, the size of the RPO backlog, capital spending on new data centres and how Oracle funds it, including debt. Because the build-out is expensive, traders also watch free cash flow and credit news. Deals with AI companies and changes in their plans can move ORCL between reports.
An unusual calendar
Oracle's fiscal year ends on 31 May, so it reports in mid-March, June, September and December, after the US close. That puts ORCL results ahead of most other cloud companies, and they are often read as an early signal for AI infrastructure demand. Oracle shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, not Nasdaq.
Multicloud and the database base
Oracle now runs its database inside rival clouds as well: Oracle Database@Azure, @AWS and @Google Cloud place Oracle hardware in their data centres. That keeps existing database customers in the fold even when they move to other clouds. The installed base of the database, built over decades, provides steady support revenue that funds part of the AI build-out.
ORCL/USDT on BRVX
The pair ORCL/USDT is a synthetic perpetual contract on Oracle's share price, quoted in USDT, backed by USDC, BTC, ETH, USDT, SOL or BNB, with no expiry. The quote keeps moving after the NYSE closes and over the weekend. You hold a price position only, so Oracle's dividend and shareholder votes do not apply.
