BRVX Glossary · Margin call · Updated September 25, 2026
A margin call is a demand from a broker or exchange to add funds or reduce a leveraged position because losses have pushed the account's equity below the required maintenance margin. If the trader does not act, the position can be closed in part or in full at the market price.
The formula
Margin call when Equity < Maintenance margin
Equity is the margin you posted plus unrealised PnL. When it falls under the maintenance level, the position is at risk.
How it works
- Losses grow Equity falls
- Below maintenance Margin call
- No top-up Forced close

A worked example
A trader opens a 5,000 USDT position with 500 USDT of margin, 10x leverage. If the venue's maintenance margin is 1% of size, or 50 USDT, a price move of about 9% against the position takes equity from 500 USDT to roughly 50 USDT, and a margin call or liquidation follows.
How to avoid one
- Use less leverage, so the same price move eats a smaller share of the margin.
- Set a stop-loss well before the liquidation price.
- Size positions so one bad move cannot empty the account.
Margin calls on crypto venues
Many crypto derivatives venues, including perpetual futures platforms, skip the phone call: when equity falls below maintenance margin the position is liquidated automatically. This page explains the general term; BRVX's own liquidation rules are not described here, so check the position in the app before opening it.
Questions about Margin call
What happens if I ignore a margin call?
The broker or venue can close part or all of the position at the market price to cover the shortfall.
Is a margin call the same as liquidation?
No. A margin call is the warning; liquidation is the forced close that follows if equity keeps falling.
Can I get a margin call without leverage?
No. A margin call only applies to positions funded partly with borrowed money or leverage.
Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
