Bitcoin or gold: the short answer
Both are pitched as protection against currency debasement. Gold has thousands of years of history, central-bank buyers and industrial use. Bitcoin has a fixed supply and trades every day, but behaves more like a risk asset in sell-offs.
The numbers show the gap: 39.0% annualized volatility for Bitcoin against 17.6% for gold in the last 30 days, with the two moving mostly independently.

Key differences between Bitcoin and gold
- Volatility: Bitcoin usually moves several times more than gold.

- On BRVX: fee 0.1% vs 0.08%; funding 0.0205% / 0.0171% per 1h vs 0.0023% / 0.0091% per 1h.
Bitcoin: pros and cons
- Pros: Higher leverage cap and bigger moves.
- Pros: Prices weekend news in real time.
- Cons: Falls with stocks in many sell-offs.
- Cons: Higher fee on BRVX (0.1%).
Gold: pros and cons
- Pros: Calmer, with long history as a hedge.
- Pros: Supported by central-bank buying.
- Cons: 30-day volatility of 17.6% on Gold, next to 39.0% on Bitcoin
- Cons: Driven by real interest rates, which can turn fast.
Bitcoin vs Gold: when to pick which
A defensive view on inflation or geopolitics is more often a gold trade. A view on risk appetite and crypto adoption is a Bitcoin trade.
Given the volatility gap, the same margin in both does not carry the same risk; compare the 30-day numbers before sizing.
Is Bitcoin digital gold?
The "digital gold" idea says Bitcoin shares gold's key traits: it is scarce, no government issues it, and nobody can print more of it. On those points the comparison holds. Neither pays interest or dividends.
The idea fails in other places. Gold has thousands of years of use as money and jewelry. Bitcoin has existed only since 2009. Gold has physical uses in industry and electronics; Bitcoin does not. And in many market sell-offs, Bitcoin has traded more like a tech stock than a safe asset. So "digital gold" is a thesis some investors hold, not a proven fact.
Bitcoin vs gold: supply and who holds them
Bitcoin supply follows fixed rules in its code. The total can never pass 21 million coins. New coins go to miners, and that reward is cut in half about every four years. This event is called the halving. Each halving slows the flow of new coins, and most coins have already been created.
Gold supply comes from mines. Miners add roughly 1–2% to the existing stock each year. When the price rises, mining more becomes worth it, so supply can respond a little. Almost all gold ever mined still exists, because gold does not rust or get used up.
The key difference: Bitcoin's future supply is known in advance. Gold's depends on prices, costs and new discoveries.
Gold has a wide base of holders. Central banks keep it as part of their reserves and have been large buyers in recent years. Jewelry is a big share of yearly demand, especially in India and China. Investors hold bars, coins and gold exchange-traded funds.
Bitcoin holders are mostly individuals, crypto funds, some public companies and, since exchange-traded funds were approved in several countries, more traditional investors. Very few central banks hold it. This matters because different holders sell for different reasons. A central bank rarely sells in a panic; a leveraged trader often has to.
How Bitcoin and gold react to inflation, rates and crises
Gold tends to react to real interest rates, meaning rates after inflation. When real rates fall, holding gold costs less in lost interest, and gold has often done well. When real rates rise fast, gold often comes under pressure. A strong US dollar can also weigh on it.
Bitcoin has been more sensitive to liquidity and risk appetite. In 2022, when major central banks raised rates quickly, Bitcoin fell far more than gold. In the sharp crash of March 2020, both fell at first, and Bitcoin fell much harder.
Past behaviour is a guide, not a rule. The link between each asset and inflation has changed over time, which is why the live correlation on this page (+0.29) is worth checking.
Volatility and drawdowns: Bitcoin vs gold
A drawdown is the fall from a peak to a low. Bitcoin has had several drawdowns of more than 70%, and each took years to recover. Gold's falls have been smaller but can last a long time: after its 2011 peak it lost around 45% over the next four years, and after its 1980 peak it took more than 25 years to get back to that price.
So gold's lower volatility (17.6% against 39.0% for Bitcoin over 30 days) does not mean it cannot lose value for years. With leverage, even a small move in either one can close a position.
Trading hours and specific risks
Bitcoin trades every hour of every day. The main gold markets, such as futures and the London market, close at weekends and pause each day. On BRVX, gold is quoted as XAUT/USDT, based on Tether Gold (XAUT). Tether states that each XAUT token is backed by one troy ounce of gold in a vault, and the token trades close to spot gold. When the main gold market is closed, the token price can move away from where gold reopens.
Other risks to know:
- XAUT depends on its issuer: you rely on Tether's statements about the gold behind each token.
- Weekend gaps: gold news over a weekend is priced in at once when markets reopen.
- Bitcoin reacts to regulation, exchange failures and large forced liquidations.
- Funding: holding a perpetual contract costs or pays funding (0.0205% / 0.0171% per 1h for Bitcoin, 0.0023% / 0.0091% per 1h for gold on BRVX).
Bitcoin vs gold as a relative trade
Some traders do not pick one side. They trade the two against each other: long BTC/USDT and short XAUT/USDT, or the reverse. This is a view on the ratio, meaning whether Bitcoin will do better or worse than gold, not on the direction of both.
Size matters here. Because Bitcoin moves several times more than gold, equal amounts in both legs are not balanced; the Bitcoin leg will drive most of the result. Many traders scale each leg by its volatility instead. Also remember that each leg pays its own fees and funding, and each can be liquidated on its own. BRVX offers price exposure only through synthetic contracts against USDT, and margin can be USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL or BNB. BRVX is not available to US persons.
