Solana or Bitcoin: the short answer
Bitcoin is priced as digital scarcity and moves with macro and fund flows. Solana is priced as a platform: its value depends on how many apps and users it keeps. That extra layer of business risk is why SOL usually moves more.
On BRVX, SOL's default leverage is set low even though its cap matches BTC, a sign of how wide its daily range can be.

- Supply: SOL has ongoing inflation for stakers; BTC issuance halves every four years.
- Volatility: Solana was the more volatile over 30 days (1.6×).
- On BRVX: fee 0.08% vs 0.1%; funding 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h vs 0.0205% / 0.0171% per 1h.
Solana: pros and cons
- Pros: Wider daily range for short-term trades.
- Pros: Lower fee than BTC on BRVX (0.08%).
- Cons: Deeper falls in risk-off weeks.
- Cons: Network-specific risks.
Bitcoin: pros and cons
- Pros: Calmer of the two.
- Pros: Clearer macro drivers.
- Cons: 30-day volatility of 39.2% on Bitcoin, next to 64.3% on Solana
- Cons: Smaller moves need more leverage to matter.
Solana vs Bitcoin: when to pick which
If you want the market's direction, Bitcoin is the cleaner instrument. If you expect altcoins to outrun Bitcoin, SOL is one of the usual vehicles, alone or against a BTC short.
How Solana and Bitcoin work under the hood
Bitcoin went live in January 2009, after a white paper published in 2008 under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Miners compete to add new blocks using computing power. This method is called proof of work. A new block arrives about every ten minutes, and the rules change very slowly on purpose.
Solana came much later. Anatoly Yakovenko described its design in 2017, and the network went live in March 2020. Validators lock up, or stake, SOL to help secure the chain. Solana also has a built-in clock called proof of history, which puts transactions in order before they are confirmed. The aim is speed: blocks come in well under a second, and fees are usually low.
So the two chains make opposite trade-offs. Bitcoin gives up speed to keep its rules simple and stable. Solana gives up some simplicity to gain speed, and its validators need powerful machines.
What moves the Solana price vs the Bitcoin price
Both coins react to the same big forces: interest rates, the US dollar, risk appetite in stock markets and news about crypto rules. Beyond that, each coin has its own drivers.
- Bitcoin: money moving into and out of spot bitcoin funds, which began trading in the US in January 2024.
- Bitcoin: the four-year halving schedule, which many traders watch. Past cycles are history, not a rule.
- Solana: activity on the chain, such as token trading, stablecoin transfers and app use. More use means more demand for SOL to pay fees and to stake.
- Solana: network reliability. The chain had several full outages, mostly in 2021 and 2022, and news of a slowdown can hit the price fast.
- Both: the mood toward altcoins, meaning coins other than bitcoin. When traders leave smaller coins, SOL usually feels it more than BTC.
How Solana and Bitcoin move together: a worked example
Over the last 30 days the two moved strongly together, with a correlation of +0.87. Correlation measures whether they move in the same direction, not by how much. Even when SOL and BTC rise and fall on the same days, Solana has been about 1.6× as volatile as Bitcoin.
Here is an example with round numbers, not live data. Say BTC falls 4% on a bad macro day and SOL falls 6%. A trader who is long $10,000 of SOL and short $10,000 of BTC loses $600 on the SOL leg and gains $400 on the BTC leg. The pair loses $200, even though the short side was meant to protect it.
This is why many traders size the two legs by volatility, not by dollar amount. If SOL tends to move 1.5 times as much as BTC, a SOL leg of about $6,700 against a BTC leg of $10,000 roughly balances the swings. The balance is never exact, and it breaks when the correlation drops.
Solana vs Bitcoin supply, and the cost of holding a position
Bitcoin's supply rule is fixed in its protocol: a cap of 21 million coins, with the block reward cut in half every 210,000 blocks. Solana has no hard cap. Its inflation, paid to stakers, started at about 8% a year and is set to fall by 15% each year until it reaches a long-term rate of 1.5%. Part of each base transaction fee is burned, which offsets a little of that issuance.
On BRVX, supply shapes the price, but your running cost comes from fees and funding. The fee is a percentage of position size, paid once to open and once to close: 0.08% per side on SOL and 0.1% per side on BTC.
Funding is a regular payment on open positions. It is charged every hour, and long and short both pay. The current rates are 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h for SOL and 0.0205% / 0.0171% per 1h for BTC, and the rate for each side can differ. Multiply the hourly rate by 24 to see the daily cost. On a trade held for many days, funding can add up to more than the fees.
Common mistakes when trading Solana vs Bitcoin
Most losses in this pair come from a few repeated errors.
- Using the same leverage on both. Because SOL moves more, the same leverage puts more of your margin at risk each day than it does on BTC.
- Treating high correlation as a full hedge. A long SOL, short BTC pair still loses when SOL falls harder than BTC.
- Forgetting that a pair has two legs. Each leg pays its own fee to open and close, and each pays funding every hour.
- Reading the halving or past altcoin rallies as a timetable. They are history, not a plan for what comes next.
- Ignoring event risk on Solana. An outage, or the failure of a large exchange closely tied to its ecosystem as in late 2022, can move SOL far more than BTC.
- Opening a trade with no exit plan. Set take-profit and stop-loss before the trade, not after.
How to trade Solana and Bitcoin on BRVX
On BRVX both are synthetic perpetual contracts quoted in USDT: SOL/USDT and BTC/USDT. A perpetual contract has no expiry date, and you trade only the price. You do not own or hold any SOL or BTC, and nothing is delivered.
You can go long or short. Leverage starts at 5x, with caps of 150x on SOL and 150x on BTC. Margin can be USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL or BNB. You can set take-profit and stop-loss on each position.
To open a trade, you sign in with email or a crypto wallet, in the browser on desktop or mobile. Leveraged trading carries high risk: a move against you can wipe out the whole margin you put into the trade. Only trade money you can afford to lose. BRVX is not available to US persons.
Where these Solana vs Bitcoin numbers come from
Built from 30 days of BRVX daily closes on SOL/USDT and BTC/USDT, through 2026-10-14: volatility annualized, leverage and fees from the live tariff.
Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
