BRVX course: Perp trading basics · 7 min read · Updated September 25, 2026
Is day trading worth it? For most people, no: large studies of retail day traders find that the large majority lose money and only about 1% earn more than a minimum wage from it. This lesson of the BRVX course weighs the numbers honestly so you can decide; lessons 11–15 then turn to reading the chart.
You have finished nine lessons on how to trade. This one asks whether you should — at least as a day trader. The answer depends less on talent than on costs, time and temperament.
Key takeaways
- Most retail day traders lose money over time.
- Costs are paid on every trade and compound against you.
- Treat trading as a skill you test with small money, not as income.
What the studies show
A study of Brazilian futures day traders (Chague, De-Losso and Giovannetti, 2019) found that 97% of those who persisted for more than 300 days lost money and only 1.1% earned more than the Brazilian minimum wage. Studies of Taiwan's market reached similar conclusions over many years of data.
Why the odds are poor
- Costs: fees and spreads on every trade, funding on leveraged positions.
- Competition: the other side is often a professional firm with faster execution.
- Leverage: it magnifies mistakes faster than skill improves.
- Behaviour: revenge trades after losses do most of the damage.
Who tends to last
Traders who start small, trade one setup, cap daily losses, keep a log and treat the first year as tuition. Many find that swing trading fits their life better than watching screens all day.
How it looks on BRVX
