A stop-limit order combines a stop price and a limit price: when the market reaches the stop, a limit order is placed at the limit price, so the order fills only at that price or better. It controls the fill price but may not fill at all if the market moves through the limit.
The formula
Sell stop-limit: fills only if price limit after trigger
The stop decides when; the limit decides the worst acceptable price.

A worked example
You hold a long at 100 and set a stop at 95 with a limit at 94. If price falls to 95, a sell limit at 94 is placed. If the market gaps from 96 to 90, the order does not fill and the position stays open while price keeps falling.
Stop-limit vs stop-market
- Stop-market: always fills once triggered, at the next available price, with possible slippage.
- Stop-limit: never fills worse than the limit, but may not fill at all.
- For protecting a leveraged position, a missed fill can cost more than slippage.
