BRVX Glossary · Stochastic oscillator · Updated September 25, 2026
The stochastic oscillator is a momentum indicator that shows where the latest close sits within the high-low range of recent periods, on a scale from 0 to 100. Developed by George Lane in the 1950s, it uses a 14-period default; readings above 80 are called overbought and below 20 oversold.
The formula
%K (Close − Low14) ÷ (High14 − Low14) × 100 %D 3-period average of %K
A close at the top of the 14-period range gives 100; at the bottom, 0.
How it works
- Range 14-period high/low
- %K Close in range
- %D Smoothed %K

Reading it
- Above 80: the close is near the top of its range — overbought.
- Below 20: near the bottom — oversold.
- %K crossing above %D: momentum turning up.
- Divergence: price makes a new high while the oscillator does not.
Stochastic versus Stochastic RSI
The classic stochastic applies Lane's formula to price. Stochastic RSI applies the same formula to RSI values, which makes it faster and far noisier — it hits 0 and 100 often.
The trend trap
In a strong uptrend, the close sits near the top of the range for weeks, so the oscillator stays above 80. Selling every overbought reading in a trend loses repeatedly; many traders only take signals in the direction of the larger trend.
On BRVX
On a 24/7 BRVX market, a 14-period stochastic on the daily chart covers 14 calendar days. On a BRVX stock perpetual that includes weekend candles, so the reading can differ from the same stock on an exchange chart that skips weekends.
Questions about Stochastic oscillator
What are the best stochastic settings?
14, 3, 3 is the common default; shorter settings are faster but noisier.
What is the difference between stochastic and RSI?
Stochastic compares the close with the recent range; RSI compares the size of up and down moves.
Is the stochastic oscillator reliable?
It works best in ranges; in strong trends it gives many false reversal readings.
