BRVX Glossary · Mean reversion · Updated September 25, 2026

Mean reversion is the tendency of a price or indicator to move back towards its average after moving far from it, and the family of strategies that bet on that return. It is the opposite bet to momentum: fade the stretch instead of following it.

Common setups

  • Price at the outer Bollinger Band in a range, targeting the middle band.
  • RSI below 30 or above 70 in a sideways market.
  • Price far from VWAP intraday, targeting a return to it.
  • Pairs trading: two related assets whose price ratio has stretched.

When it works and when it fails

Mean reversion works best in ranges — when ADX is low and there is no news driving price. In a strong trend, “oversold” can stay oversold for weeks. Selling a rising market because it looks stretched is a classic way to be squeezed.

A simple test before trading it live: measure how often, over the past year, price returned to its 20-period average within five candles after closing two standard deviations away.

Risk profile

Mean-reversion strategies tend to win often and lose rarely but large. Without a stop, one trend day can wipe out many small wins; with a stop, the win rate falls. Both sides of that trade-off have to be tested.

On BRVX

Fading a move on BRVX means trading against it on a perpetual, long or short. A stop beyond the extreme matters: at 10x on BTC/USDT, liquidation is about 7.81% away, and stretched markets often stretch further.

Questions about Mean reversion

Momentum or trend following.
