BRVX Glossary · Overbought and oversold · Updated September 25, 2026

Overbought and oversold describe an asset whose price has moved so far, so fast, that a pause or pullback is more likely than usual. The terms usually refer to oscillator readings: RSI above 70 or below 30, or a stochastic above 80 or below 20.

Standard levels

  • RSI: above 70 overbought, below 30 oversold.
  • Stochastic: above 80 overbought, below 20 oversold.
  • Bollinger Bands: a close outside the outer band.
  • Some traders use 80/20 on RSI in strong trends to cut false readings.

Overbought is not a sell signal

In a strong uptrend, RSI can stay above 70 for weeks while price keeps rising; in a crash, oversold becomes more oversold. The readings describe speed, not direction. They work best in ranges, and as warnings to tighten stops rather than as reasons to reverse.

Better uses

Waiting for the oscillator to leave the zone — RSI falling back below 70 — filters some false signals. Divergences between price and the oscillator at an extreme carry more weight than the extreme itself.

On BRVX

BRVX markets trade 24/7, so overbought and oversold readings on a BRVX daily chart are built from seven candles a week rather than five. The result can differ from the same stock on an exchange chart, so compare readings only on the chart you actually trade.

Questions about Overbought and oversold

Price has risen fast enough that an oscillator reading is at an extreme, often RSI above 70.

Should you sell when an asset is overbought?

Not by itself; in trends assets stay overbought for long periods.

What does oversold mean?

Price has fallen fast enough to push an oscillator to a low extreme, often RSI below 30.
