XRP or Ethereum: the short answer
Ethereum is a general platform: anyone can deploy a contract, and ETH pays for it. The XRP Ledger is narrower, focused on payments and token transfers, with a built-in exchange but limited programmability.
That makes ETH a bet on the whole app ecosystem, and XRP a bet on adoption in payments and on legal clarity.
Ownership concentration is another gap: a large share of XRP sits with one company and is released on a schedule, while ETH supply is spread across stakers, funds and exchanges. Scheduled releases can weigh on XRP around their dates.

Key differences between XRP and Ethereum
- Scope: payments and transfers vs general smart contracts.
- Validation: trusted validator list vs proof-of-stake validators.
- Supply: XRP fixed at launch; ETH issued to stakers with part of fees burned.
- On BRVX: both fee 0.08%/0.08%; funding 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h vs 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h.
XRP: pros and cons
- Pros: Moves on its own catalysts.
- Pros: Fast, cheap transfers are easy to explain.
- Cons: Narrow use case.
- Cons: News-driven spikes fade fast.
Ethereum: pros and cons
- Pros: Largest smart-contract ecosystem.
- Pros: Many independent drivers of demand.
- Cons: Competition from faster chains.
- Cons: Tied to overall DeFi activity.
XRP vs Ethereum: when to pick which
A view on crypto apps and stablecoins leans Ethereum; a view on payment adoption or regulation leans XRP.
Both carry the same margin options on BRVX: USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL or BNB.
What XRP and Ethereum are under the hood
The XRP Ledger went live in 2012. It was built by a small team of developers, some of whom went on to found the company now called Ripple. All 100 billion XRP were created at launch. No new XRP can ever be made, and a tiny amount is destroyed with every transaction as a fee.
Ethereum launched in July 2015. It works like a shared computer: developers deploy smart contracts, which are programs that run on the network by themselves. Every action costs a fee called gas, paid in ETH. Since 2022, validators who lock up, or stake, ETH secure the network.
The XRP Ledger uses neither mining nor staking. Each server picks a list of validators it trusts, and the network agrees on new transactions every few seconds. This is fast and cheap, but it gives a smaller group of validators more weight.
What moves the XRP price and the Ethereum price
Both coins follow the wider crypto market: interest rates, the US dollar, risk appetite and changes in crypto rules. Beyond that, their own drivers are quite different.
- XRP and the courts: in December 2020 the US SEC sued Ripple, saying XRP sales were securities offerings. Rulings in that case moved XRP far more than ETH.
- XRP and Ripple news: announcements about banks or payment firms using Ripple's products often cause fast spikes. Many of them fade within days.
- XRP escrow: Ripple placed a large amount of XRP in escrow, a locked account that releases up to 1 billion XRP each month. Unused XRP goes back into escrow, and traders watch these dates.
- ETH and network use: busy periods for stablecoins, apps and on-chain trading raise fees and the amount of ETH burned.
- ETH upgrades and funds: large network upgrades and money moving in and out of US spot ether ETFs, trading since July 2024, are regular drivers.
How XRP and Ethereum move together: a worked example
Most days XRP and ETH move in the same direction, because the whole crypto market tends to rise and fall together. Right now the 30-day correlation is +0.89, which reads as strongly together. A value near +1 means they move in step. A value near 0 means little link.
Correlation says nothing about the size of the moves. Over the same period XRP was about 1.5× as volatile as Ethereum. Here is an example with round numbers: two positions of $1,000 each. If the market drops and ETH falls 4% while XRP falls 7%, the ETH position loses $40 and the XRP position loses $70. Same direction, very different result.
XRP also has days that break the pattern. A court ruling or a company announcement can move XRP sharply while ETH barely changes. These days pull the correlation down, and they are where the risk of trading one against the other sits.
XRP vs Ethereum: the cost of holding a perp over time
A perpetual contract has no end date, so the cost of holding it grows with time. On BRVX two costs apply: a fee to open and to close, and funding. Funding is a small payment charged every hour on the position size. Both long and short pay it, and the rate depends on the side.
For XRP/USDT the current funding is 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h. For ETH/USDT it is 0.016% / 0.0103% per 1h. A day has 24 funding periods, so a position held for a week pays funding 168 times. The fee, 0.08% for XRP and 0.08% for ETH, is paid once to open and once to close.
Crypto prices move 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and funding keeps running through nights and weekends. For a short trade on an XRP news spike, the fee is the main cost. For a trade on Ethereum held for weeks, funding adds up.
Common mistakes when trading XRP vs Ethereum
A few errors come up again and again with this pair.
- Judging by unit price: one XRP costs far less than one ETH because there are far more coins. A low price per coin does not mean more room to rise.
- Mixing up Ripple and XRP: Ripple is a company, XRP is the coin. Good news for the company does not always lift the coin for long.
- Chasing headlines: XRP spikes on news often reverse. Entering late with high leverage can turn a small pullback into a large loss.
- Trusting correlation too much: a long XRP, short ETH position can lose on both legs when one coin moves on its own news.
- Ignoring holding costs: hourly funding on two positions adds up over weeks.
How to trade XRP and Ethereum on BRVX
On BRVX, XRP and Ethereum are synthetic perpetual contracts quoted in USDT: XRP/USDT and ETH/USDT. You trade the price only. You do not own any XRP or ETH, and nothing is delivered.
You can go long or short on each, with leverage from 5x up to 100x on XRP and 100x on ETH. Margin can be USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL or BNB, and you can set take-profit and stop-loss on a position. BRVX lists 41 markets, works in the browser on desktop and mobile, and you sign in with email or a crypto wallet.
Before you open a trade, know the risk: leveraged trading can lose your whole margin, and higher leverage makes that happen faster. Only trade money you can afford to lose. BRVX is not available to US persons.
Where these XRP vs Ethereum numbers come from
30 days of BRVX closes for XRP/USDT and ETH/USDT, ending 2026-10-13, feed the volatility and correlation above; leverage, fees and funding read from the live tariff.
Leverage works both ways: a small move against you can lose you the whole margin.
