What is different about Memorial Day
Memorial Day honours US service members who died in military service. For markets it opens the summer holiday stretch, and bond trading usually ends early on the Friday before. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day on May 30 and moved to the last Monday of May under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, effective 1971. The date therefore ranges from May 25 to May 31. The next NYSE closure after it, Juneteenth, comes less than four weeks later.
