The Ichimoku cloud (Ichimoku Kinko Hyo) is a technical indicator of five lines that shows trend direction, momentum and support and resistance at a glance. Developed by Japanese journalist Goichi Hosoda and published in 1969, it uses default periods of 9, 26 and 52.

The five lines

  • Tenkan-sen (conversion line): midpoint of the last 9 periods' high and low.
  • Kijun-sen (base line): midpoint of the last 26 periods.
  • Senkou span A: average of the two lines above, plotted 26 periods ahead.
  • Senkou span B: midpoint of the last 52 periods, plotted 26 ahead.
  • Chikou span: the close, plotted 26 periods back.

Reading the cloud

The space between spans A and B is the cloud (kumo). Price above the cloud is read as an uptrend, below as a downtrend, inside as no trend. A thick cloud acts as strong support or resistance; a thin one is easier to break.

Settings on 24/7 markets

The 9-26-52 settings came from a six-day trading week in 1960s Japan. Some crypto traders scale them (for example 20-60-120) because the market never closes; others keep the defaults because most charts use them.

On BRVX

On BRVX, stock and crypto candles continue through weekends, so a 26-period cloud on a daily BRVX chart spans 26 calendar days rather than about five exchange weeks. Compare readings only between charts built the same way.
