What is different about New Year's Eve
The stock market and the bond market split on this day. US bond markets close early at 2:00 p.m. ET under the SIFMA recommendation, while stocks trade to the usual 4:00 p.m. bell. When January 1 falls on a Saturday, as in 2028, NYSE does not move the holiday to December 31. NYSE Rule 7.2 normally moves a Saturday holiday to the Friday before, but makes an exception when that Friday ends a monthly or yearly accounting period. That is why December 31, 2027 stays a full trading day.
